Наречие long обычно употребляется в отрицательных или вопросительных предложениях: have you been waiting long? вы давно ждете?; they didn't stay long они пробыли здесь недолго. В утвердительных предложениях обычно употребляется сочетание с прилагательным long - (for) a long time: they stayed there for a very long time они оставались там очень долго. В отрицательных же предложениях чаще употребляется наречие long: it won't take me long я это сделаю быстро/это не займет у меня много времени. В конструкции с усилительным too во всех типах предложений употребляется наречие long: they have been waiting too long они уже очень давно ждут; I will write to you before too long я вам скоро напишу. (2.) Наречие long и наречный оборот for a long time стоят в конце предложения. (3.) Русскому больше не соответствуют два наречия в английском языке - no (any) more и no (any) longer. Первое является наречием степени, второе - наречием времени: we are no longer working there/we do not work there any longer мы там больше (уже) не работаем; don't tell me any more about it не рассказывай мне больше (ничего) об этом; I can't stand this noise any longer я больше/дольше не могу оставаться в этом шуме. Оборот no longer обычно стоит перед глаголом: she no longer works here, а оборот any longer, в конце предложения: she doesn't work here any longer. (4.) Наречие long образует ряд выражений, соответствующих русским "вскоре" - before long: we all were very tired and before long everybody was asleep мы все устали и вскоре все уснули; задолго до - long before smth: we came long before the concert started мы пришли задолго до начала концерта; много времени спустя - long after: it happened long after his arrival это произошло спустя много времени после его приезда; сколько/как давно - how long: how long have you been waiting? сколько вы уже ждете?; столько/ сколько (захотите) - as long as (you like): you can stay here as long as you like оставайтесь здесь столько, сколько захотите; поскольку/если/раз/уж - as/so long as: you may go as long as you promise to come back before dark можешь пойти, если/раз обещаешь вернуться засветло.
